"I like that Helen Mirren has been saying the next Doctor should be a woman. I would like to go on record and say that the Queen should be played by a man." - Steven Moffat, like, half an hour ago.
Is anyone at all surprised by this? Think about it - this is Steven Moffatwe’re dealing with here. The guy is legendary for three things: handling criticism with all the grace & wit of Joffrey Baratheon, writing overly complicated plots, and horrendous handling of every female character he’s ever created or inherited. River Song, Amy Pond, Irene Adler, Rose Tyler…hell, even Madame Du Pompadour! In real life, she was an accomplished, educated woman whose time in the French court is viewed as one of the high points of the monarchy’s history, yet Steven Moffat turned her into some lovelorn little girl, pining for more of the Doctor’s kisses.
Truth be told, I would relish a woman getting to wield the sonic at some point. I love it when great actresses get great parts, and I can think of few greater than the Doctor. But not now. Not while Steven Moffat is, in any way, allowed any scrap of influence on her character at all, period. I’m glad he’s such a sexist twat that he’ll never cast a female Doctor, because it means we won’t have to sit there for 3-4 years and watch him destroy a female Doctor.
